Leonard Haynes has
been appointed as senior advisor to the Under Secretary at
the U.S. Department of Education. He has been serving as a
distinguished adjunct professor in the John Glenn College of
Public Affairs at Ohio State University.

Dr. Haynes is not new to the Department of Education. He is
the former assistant secretary for postsecondary education in
the administration of George H.W. Bush. He also served as
senior director of institutional service for the Office of
Postsecondary Education during the Obama administration. Dr.
Haynes also has served as the director of the White House
Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

In the academic world, Dr. Haynes has taught at Howard
University, the University of Maryland, Southern University,
and George Washington University. He was acting president of
Grambling State University in Louisiana and senior assistant
to the president of American University in Washington. D.C.

Dr. Haynes is a graduate of Southern University in Baton
Rouge, Louisiana. He holds a master’s degree from Carnegie
Mellon University in Pittsburgh and a Ph.D. in higher
education administration from Ohio State University.
